Most people fangirl over their celebrity crushes or their favourite popstar. I fangirl over ponies. And I’m not even kidding!! Meet Pookie, the perfect male model!
Some time ago, Christina won a photoshoot with me. It was so long ago that I can’t even remember what it was for now. But I know the conditions were that the shoot had to be held in Essex. So, after finally getting a date in the diary, Christina boxed Pookie all the way from their home in Oxfordshire, to Thorndon Country Park, in Brentwood, to meet me.
And I was SO excited to photograph these two! Look. At. Him!
Pookie, or ‘Guards Jester’, is pretty special and he has the credentials to back up his dreamboat looks. He’s an eighteen year-old Fell stallion, out of Guards Joanne, by Heltondale Bellman V. He has been with Christina and her family for eight years and in that time, they’ve achieved quite a lot.
Most notably, they’ve qualified for Olympia for the first time for both of them and then in 2015 they went on to win the In Hand SSADL (Senior Showing and Dressage) Olympia Supreme Champion! What an incredible accolade!
Christina says, “I couldn’t imagine sharing it with anyone else – he truly is my best friend. He helped me out a lot when my grandad passed away from Cancer on Christmas Day 2015.” It’s always so moving to see such strong relationships between horses and their owners and these two clearly adore one another.
In 2013, Pookie underwent an operation to remove a cancerous lump from his ‘boy parts’ and has thankfully made a full recovery. However, before that, he was a busy stallion and is the proud father of twenty-six foals.
Christina and Pookie would love to qualify for Olympia again this year and have four shows left to get that golden ticket. I’m wishing them every bit of luck and would love to see them in that iconic ring this Christmas!
Thank you so much to Christina and her mum, for travelling all the way down to meet me and most of all, for letting me loose on their stunning boy. He is every equine photographers dream and I could have photographed him all day long. He certainly knew how to work the camera and just loved the attention. What a true showman!
And if anybody else out there has any prolific show ponies who love to pose, please do get in touch. I’d love to meet you, tell your story and photograph your beautiful horses!
