Last week, on a very warm Tuesday afternoon, I went over to visit three of the liveries at Jotman’s Farm, in Benfleet, and their horses.
My first volunteers were Georgie and her gorgeous coloured mare, Athena. Athena is a seven year-old Irish Sports Horse and was imported over from Ireland. Her showname is Bally Fine Weather and Georgie has owned her for three years now.
Athena and Georgie have had a bit of a rough ride, since they first came together. Athena has had four months off due to eye ulcers, grade four bleeding gastric ulcers, strained check ligament and an allergic reaction, causing a mass swelling on her face.
So, sadly, the pair haven’t been able to make much headway with the hopes and plans that Georgie has for them. However, Athena is finally fighting fit and she and Georgie have been schooling so that they can compete in dressage competitions.
Despite Athena’s catalogue of ailments, she and Georgie have managed to get out to a local show and do attend Susan Saward clinics, when they can. They also enjoy a little trip over to Langdon Hills Country Park, in Thurrock, for a good gallop.
Fingers crossed things are on the up for Georgie and Athena and they can now spend the summer getting out and about, enjoying time together and having tons of fun!
