Last weekend I went down to Farnham, in Surrey, to meet Kally and her gang after her nan bought her a shoot for her eighteenth birthday present. Kally has Honey, Candy and Perry, all of whom are very different, so I had great fun getting to know all of their individual characters.
First up was little Barbie pony, Honey. Honey is.a twenty two year-old Welsh x Arab and is actually owned by a lady called Julia. Julia bought Honey as a six year-old, when she was brought over from Ireland, but felt like Honey (who prefers to do everything at speed) was a bit much for her. She didn’t want to sell her, and wanted her to have a job, hence how Kally came to ride her.
Kally has been riding Honey for five years and describes her as ‘exciting to ride’, lol. She isn’t afraid to throw in a buck or a bronc and enjoys jumping at top speed. And Kally has learned to anticipate her tricks and hold on and hope for the best. Sadly, though, Honey was diagnosed with cushings last year so is now only in light work and supposed to be slowing down. Although it doesn’t seem that she got the memo!
Next up we had Candy, who is an eighteen year-old New Forest pony. Kally has owned Candy for six years and just recently, her first owners got in touch and Kally found out that Candy actually had quite a sad start in life.
She came off of the New Forest at six months old, as an orphan foal, because her mother had sadly drowned. Her owners had her for around ten years, before selling her on and it seems that she went through quite a few owners between them and Kally. Kally thinks that this is because she can be a very grumpy mare.
Then a couple of years ago, when all was going well and Kally and Candy were getting out and about to shows, Candy was diagnosed with a lung condition called heaves, which meant Kally thought she might lose her. She made a miraculous recovery but the condition is now managed on a day-to-day basis, with nebulisers and light work.
And last but certainly not least, I met Perry. Who I completely fell in love with. Perry is a seven year-old gypsy cob and was dumped at Kally’s yard when he was just weeks old, without his mother. Kally took it upon herself to hand rear him and she says this is why he’s such a ‘devil’ now, because he was babied by her. Lol!
But Perry really is quite a character, who rears and smiles on command! He adores hacking and jumping and often goes out to local shows to jump 70cm, getting placed every time and thoroughly enjoying himself. Kally hopes to introduce him to cross country soon and see what he’s capable off.
Thanks so much for having me, Kally, and for introducing me to your babies. And thank you to Kally’s nan, Caroline, for getting in touch and for making lunch. It was an absolute pleasure!
