On a breezy, but sunny Sunday morning, just after the clocks had gone forward for Spring, I took a lovely drive over to Much Hadham, in Hertfordshire, to meet Kate, her mum Claire and Kate’s pony, Bertie.
I absolutely LOVE the way that Claire describes Bertie, when I asked her to tell me about him. She says… ‘He is out to prove unicorns do exist and infiltrate the eventing world.’ And, I mean, look at him. If he isn’t all the proof you need! 😉
Bertie is an eleven year-old Connemara cross, but firmly believes he is an Andalusian/unicorn/superstar. He even does a very convincing Spanish walk, to boot. And Kate has owned him for about a year.
They have spent their first year together bonding and building their relationship, in preparation for their first season out together, this year. And so far they have done the Windsor sponsored ride, some cross country schooling and a spot of showjumping and dressage.
Kate apparently has lots and lots of plans for her and Bertie, for the Spring and Summer, and can’t wait to get out and about more. She has also been teaching Bertie clicker training, including that Spanish walk, and even some piaffe steps.
These two seem like they’re just all about having fun, which I love. And this pony is very clearly well loved and a real part of the family.
I had such a nice morning with Claire, Kate and Bertie (and dog, Muddy) in the sun. And Bertie was the perfect model. Even if he didn’t want to show off his moves in the field afterwards and would much rather just stand and be cuddled, lol! Thanks for having me Claire and Kate!
