When I started writing this, it was just another blog post. But, as somebody who isn’t very emotional, I found this incredibly moving to write! This is exactly what I would say to myself if I could go back in time. This is everything I feel, about my story and experiences so far.
And to all of those of you reading this letter, about to begin your own journey (or perhaps you’ve already begun and are needing a little encouragement) remember these words. I wish I could tell my younger self these things to help me through hard times and help me see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Of course, my journey is far from over. In fact, I’m hoping it’s only just beginning. But I just remember those days when I was so uncertain and almost allowed people to get inside my head. Knowing that I was right all along and that hard work would see me through, would have been all I needed.
I wanted to write to you, to tell you about the incredible journey you are about to embark on. The one you can’t even imagine is coming your way. Right now, you’re working as an event photographer, photographing football, dance, black tie, everything. And you’re looking at the work of equine photographers, wishing you were them. You’ve decided to try out some equine photoshoots to see how they go, and you have no idea how it’s about to change your life!
Over the next five/six years, you will grow and learn and succeed, in ways you can’t even comprehend right now. You will also fail, make mistakes, struggle and want to quit, a lot too. But it’s all part of the process. And I promise that it just makes the wins so much more satisfying!
The first thing you need to understand is that not everybody is going to get this journey of yours. And that’s ok. It’s not for them!
People are going to tell you you’re crazy, delusional, too ambitious, not doing it properly, they’re going to tell you it’s time to get a real job and tell you that there’s no money in what you’re trying to do. And most frustratingly, people will tell you to your face that they think it’s great, just to humour you and then they’ll roll your eyes behind your back, as if you’re a crazy person that they need to placate.
You must ignore them. Because, speaking from the future, they’re all wrong! This is going to work, just the way you feel in your gut it is. It’s going to work and it’s going to be beyond your most wonderful dreams.
All you want to do is take pretty photographs of horses, but what you don’t even realise is that you’re about to build a lifestyle business that most people only wish they were brave enough to pursue. It’s those people that you need to watch out for. Whilst you are choosing your own hours, not caring that it’s Monday and travelling around taking pictures of ponies, they will be in the background, telling you it’s not a real job and belittling your dreams. That’s not to say that the life you want to live is right for everybody. We all have different paths to follow and everyone has their own hopes, dreams and motivation. But the fact that you have chosen to take a risk and follow your dreams, will confuse and scare people. Those with small minds will tell you it can’t be done.
But you have to trust me. Anything can be done if somebody is brave enough to commit to doing it. This journey you’re about to take is going to be so fulfilling and it’s going to change you as a person! You will learn that everybody wants different things from life and you will discover what it is that motivates you specifically.
Not only are you going to be able to get up every day and do a job you love, you’re going to be able to build and mould a business to suit everything you enjoy doing, and say no to anything that doesn’t fit with your goals and passion. You’re going to feel like the luckiest girl in the world. And you will be!
You’ll wake up each morning and feel a gratitude so powerful, that it will fuel you for the entire day. You’ll want to pinch yourself because you can’t believe how lucky you are to be earning a living doing something you love so much! It’s this gratitude that will send more amazing things your way. Hold onto it!
And along the way, you’re going to find out who you really are. You’re going to work out what you love, what’s important to you, where you’re meant to be, what you want your life to look like. You’re going to learn the power of positive thinking, you’re going to cut anything that makes you feel negative from your life and you’re going to learn to appreciate everything from the smallest moments, to the biggest successes.
You’re going to meet some incredible people and make friends for life, you’re going to have experiences that you didn’t even know were out there and you’re going to work with some amazing individuals. As well as this, the people that you surround yourself with are going to offer you so much support, love and understanding that at times you will be overwhelmed by it. Love them back just as hard and make time to spend with this people. They are your people and they are the most important thing in your world!
One piece of crucial advice I have for you, because I know this is something you’re going to struggle with along the way, is that you do not have to do it like everybody else is doing it. If you want to take a different path or try a different way, do it. If you want to build a different business or portray a different image, that’s fine! There is no right or wrong. Different is good and you will find your own way, even if it’s a little unusual, compared to everybody else. Life would be boring if we were all the same and in a saturated market, you need to carve out your space.
There will be less amazing times too, of course. There will be days when you feel lonely working from home alone. There will be times when you struggle to make the financial ends meet. There will be times when you question everything and wonder if everybody else is right. Are you out of your depth? Should you get a normal job? Are you being selfish and delusional? Are you a fraud? Are you even good enough?
Once again, trust me. You need to push through these fears, buckle up and ride out the tough times and just wait for things to smooth themselves out. They will. It just takes time, patience and hard work! But you must back yourself at all times. You do have what it takes. You wouldn’t have been given these dreams if you didn’t.
Just remember this… If you don’t do it, someone else will. And you will have to watch them do it, wishing it were you. There is absolutely no reason that anybody else is more entitled or capable of building the life you are imagining. You have all the resources, imagination and capability that you need for this journey of yours. All you need to do is work hard, be nice and get on with it.
Good luck! You’re about to find out who you really are.
All my love and endless support,
Your future self. x
I hope this gives you the motivation you need to see you through to brighter days, too. Sometimes all we need is somebody to say that they believe in us.
If that’s what you’re after, know this; I truly do believe in you!
