In post number two of my shoot at God’s House Livery, in Colchester, we meet Lucinda, Herbie, Alfie, Rio, India and Murphy.
First up I was introduced to partners in crime, Herbie and Alfie, the rising two year-old American Miniatures. These two are a hilarious little double act and so full of character!
Spellbound Royal Blue (Herbie) is the palomino and white and Lu has owned him since weaning. She says that he is currently going through his terrible twos but is generally an absolute pleasure to have around.
Spellbound Eternal Summer (Alfie), the little skewbald, was a bit of an additional extra, as when Lu went to view Herbie, her mum fell in love with Alfie. Alfie also visits the local hospice, with Ellie’s Zari, to give cuddles to the patients.
Herbie and Alfie are both by sire Aesthete Faurytale Prince, both go out showing and will both hopefully be broken to dirve, to compete in performance classes and as a pair. Lu says that there is so much you can do with the Minis, including Long rein dressage, in hand jumping, working hunter, obstacle courses, the lot!
Along with Herbie and Alfie, we had the much more mature, sensible Rio. Eight year-old Shadowplay Rio Zorro is a 36” British Miniature Horse and was Ellie’s first Mini. She bought him as a companion initially but later decided that he needed a job and started taking him showing. She said he loves to be busy and enjoys jumping, agility and is also just been broken to drive. However, he will turn into a total diva if he gets cold, wet, or hungry and Lu has even been forced to leave the ring if Rio doesn’t feel the circumstances are to his liking! Lol! But he was an angel on our shoot, so he was obviously happy with the conditions. 😉
Next we had the beautiful India. Moresford Comet, as she is more formally know, is a stamp I’m much more used to, and is a four year-old, traditional cob. Lu found her when she went to view Ellie’s pony Annie, but preferred India instead. She was covered in sunburn and had a mane full of dreadlocks, not to mention completely unhandled, but clearly a bit of TLC has done her wonders.
India was broken to ride over the winter, after exploring the local in hand show circuit, and is now enjoying hacking out and the odd mooch around the school.
And finally, the main man! Murphy is Lu’s super handsome, twenty-two year-old traditional cob and I just luuurve him! Lu has owned Murphy for sixteen years. He originally belonged to a friend, who sold him. He then returned back, being labelled as ‘too strong’ and was sold again. When he returned again Lu decided that fate was trying to tell her something and she bought him for herself.
Sadly Murphy is living a slower pace of life these days as he is one of those horses that spends the majority of his time on sick leave, including a DDFT injury, which really put the tin lid on his ridden career, three years ago. He now enjoys life as a companion to Ellie’s boy Charlie, and a glorified lawn mower, which I think he’s perfectly happy about.
Huge, huge thank you to both Ellie and Lu, for such a great day. Everything from minis, to horse and carts, galloping around bareback and dogs riding ponies, I thoroughly enjoyed myself!! Thank you for having me!
