I’ve photographed Mily and her gorgeous Fjord pony, Balou, before, so when I got the message from her to say that she wanted another shoot with her new additions and her sister’s ponies, I knew it’d be a nice catch up.
Just to refresh, Balou is a sixteen year-old Norwegian Fjord pony and is just the squidgiest, most loveable little chap. He has been with Mily for eight years and is her horse of a lifetime.
Mily and Balou used to do a bit of jumping together, but sadly, he’s a bit prone to injury. And after a few different leg injuries, Balou now lives a quieter life, with a bit of in-hand showing here and dressage here and there. He has also just recovered from gastric ulcers, so is slowly coming back into light work.
Then there is little Secret, the coloured yearling. Meepswood Twilight Secret came to Mily in February and is a Welsh Sec A cross. The plan was for Mily to get a Shetland to show in-hand, something she’d wanted to do since she was a child, but she somehow ended up with this little princess instead. And wouldn’t swap her for the world.
Mily says that it’s easy to forget how young Secret is, as she just takes everything in her stride, although as she is finding her feet, she is gradually beginning to test her boundaries, lol. Mily and Secret have been out showing a few times and have recieved very positive comments from the judges. So their aim is to qualify for some of the bigger shows, in the future.
And lastly, I met Sparky. Sparky is a ten year-old (large!) Welsh Cob and has only been on loan to Mily for three weeks, so she is the newbie of the family. She has had a very interest life, as she is an ex-army troop horse and used to pull the gun carriage.
Sparky left the army two years ago and she and Mily will spend a little while getting to know one another, before hopefully trying their hand at a bit of everything together. They have already been to one in-hand show, where Spark won the driving type class and stood reserve champion, so they’re off to a great start!
Thanks so much, for having me back for Balou cuddles and to meet your new additions, Mily. Keep your eyes peeled for Emma’s photos tomorrow.
