The day after Storm Dorris, when the winds had subsided and the sun decided to grace us with it’s presence, I took a very local trip over to meet Cheryl and her newest addition.
When Cheryl got in touch to tell me that she’d had an early foal born and would love some photos of him before he grew much bigger, I was excited to get a shoot booked in for her.
I absolutely love mare and foal shoots. Despite the fact that you usually have little to no control over how a foal performs in front of your camera, there is something so uninhibited and fun about them, and everyone knows what timewasters foals are, so I could sit and photograph them for hours!
However, what I didn’t know was that Cheryl owns miniature horses and that I was about to meet the smallest foal I’d ever come across!!
Everyone, meet Sonic!
Sonic is a week old miniature horse and too cute for words!!
He is out of Cheryl’s mare, Wendann Bedazzled, and by her stallion, So Chic Gosh Gatsby, who are both American Miniatures.
He is seriously adorable and bursting with personality. He had a great time whizzing around the field with his mum, Dazzle, showing off his moves for the camera and playing chase with Cheryl’s cat.
Cheryl tells me that she hopes Sonic will follow in his father and grandfather’s footsteps, becoming a show horse and also being broken to drive. Sonic’s dad, Gatsby, is being broken to drive this year and his granddad was a multiple supreme driving horse, in France.
Both Dazzle and Gatsby have previously qualified for MHOYS (Miniature Horse of the Year Show). Gatsby passed his elite grading last year, giving him a lifetime certificate to enter MHOYS every year without having to qualify, and Cheryl says that both his and her greatest achievement to date is winning the Overall Supreme of the restricted ring at MHCGB (Miniature Horse Club of Great Britain) Championship Show, last year! So baby Sonic certainly comes from good stock.
Cheryl mentioned booking a shoot for the summer, for her other minis, once they are looking less wintery, but obviously wanted to capture little Sonic whilst he was so teeny. So I can’t wait to go back and meet the rest of the gang, as well as see how Sonic has grown.
Thank you so much for having me Cheryl. I’m glad we got such a lovely day for it and no chance of Sonic blowing away in Doris’s high winds. It was fab to meet you all and I look forward to our summer shoot! 😀
