Last weekend I took a three hour trip up to Worcester to meet Rachel and her childhood pony, Lady. It’s always a real treat to photograph a partnership that has been together for a long time, because they usually know one another inside out and just have this unspoken bond that can only come with time.
Lady is a twenty-nine year-old cob cross Arab and Rachel, who is thirty next year, has got her for her tenth birthday! Every little girls’ dream, right?!
Rachel tells me that she learnt how to ride on Lady and also learnt how to ride bareback, because at the time, they couldn’t afford a saddle. She says that she grew up on a council estate and keeping Lady was expensive, but she got a job at the local riding school, aged thirteen, so help pay for her.
As many pony owners will empathise with, Rachel often gets asked ‘When are you going to get something bigger’, but she says she’s always been perfectly happy with her pint sized pony and says that the bond she has with Lady, due to growing up together, is irreplacable.
When they were younger, Rachel and Lady used to hack past fiance John’s farm, after school every day, and the pair would wave to one another. And now, they’re planning their wedding for next year. Lady and dogs, Lolly and Terry will all be involved!
Lady is now fully retired. She suffers from laminitis in the Spring, if her diet isn’t managed correctly and she’s getting to be an old lady now (although you definitely wouldn’t know, when you meet her!) so Rachel is trying to convince her to live a slower pace of life. But Lady is truly full of beans, jogging all the way home from the fields we used on our shoot.
Thank you so much to Rachel, John, Lady, Terry and Lolly, for such a lovely shoot. I’m so glad that we (mostly) managed to avoid the April showers and we didn’t get too wet. It was great to meet you all and best of luck with the wedding next year!!
