At the weekend I went to see a familiar face and meet the rest of the family, over at Thames Oak Shires, in Tilbury.

A couple of years back, I had the pleasure of photographing the beautiful, prolific Shire stallion, Leaventhorpe R Bill, and this year, his owners invited me back to capture some images of the rest of the gang.

First up, I met their three gorgeous 2017 filly foals, Betsy, Diddly and Heather. Betsy and Heather are Billy’s daughters and Diddly is his granddaughter. Their posh names are Thames Oak Glamour Girl, Thames Oak Delilah and Thames Oak Heavens Gift.

Betsy, the bay filly, has already been out and won the foal class at the Essex Heavy Horse Show and the smaller black filly, Diddly, went Champion Foal at the Wisbech Show.

I also met the stud’s three mares, who, like the babies, were so friendly and inquisitive that it was hard to get them to show off for us. However, Lisa, the gigantic black mare with the white face, was quite happy to pose. Lisa came second at the Shire Horse National Show, earlier this year, in the Senior Mares Class.

And, last but very obviously not least, we went to say hello to Billy. I wasn’t actually supposed to be photographing him, as he’s in his winter scruffs and was happily munching on his breakfast, enjoying his time off.

But I couldn’t leave without giving him a cuddle, because he’s just such a sweetheart and of course, he couldn’t resist showing off for us a little bit. And when this horse shows off, he’s SO impressive! I’m pretty sure the ground moves when he gallops around his paddock.
