I always enjoy going back to my old livery yard, at Limbourne Park, in Mundon. So I was excited when Vicky booked me to go over and photograph her two horses, mother and son, Poppy and Hugo.
Vicky has owned Crackerjack Poppy for thirteen years, so she really is her princess and best friend. Poppy is now twenty-eight and fully retired.
Before her retirement Vicky and Poppy did everything together, including affiliated showjumping, dressage and even side-saddle. However, Vicky tells me that more recently, Poppy’s joints aren’t so great.
You may notice she also has one eye, as she had it removed due to health problems. However, it doesn’t seem to bother her in the slightest and she is still as full of beans as ever. In fact, despite Vicky telling me how laid back she was, she jogged everywhere we took her, just to make sure we were all very aware that the old girl still had it. 😉
Hugo is Poppy’s baby boy and is now eight years-old. His posh name is Royal Ultimatum and he is by beautiful two-time BSHA Hack of the Year stallion, Stanley Grange Royal Appointment.
Vicky affectionately tells me, “He has been trouble since day one!” Vicky and Hugo have had all kinds of problems including lameness, eye infections and long-stay visits to the vets. Most recently, Hugo underwent successful Kissing Spines surgery, last October and Vicky hopes to be back in the saddle by the end of the summer.
“He is the complete opposite to Poppy’s quiet, calm attitude to life. He is grumpy and spooky, but stunning and has so much potential. I would love to actually get him out and let him see the world.”
Thank you to Vicky, for having me back to Limbourne. And also to Vicky’s Mum, and fiance Andrew, aswell as her lovely friends for all their help holding horses and getting them smiling. Very much appreciated. 🙂
